Bridge Expansion Joint Price Factors and Purchasing Guide for Engineering Projects

发布于 2026-10-17

Hengshui Zhanhe Engineering Rubber Co., Ltd. supplies bridge expansion joint and related engineering rubber products to contractors, distributors and infrastructure projects worldwide. A purpose-made device fitted at the beam ends. It lets the deck move with temperature, shrinkage and traffic while the sealing band keeps water away from bearings and piers.

This article explains the working principle, main types, typical applications, installation points, selection criteria, standards and frequently asked questions about bridge expansion joint, and is intended for engineers, purchasers and project managers.

1. What Is Bridge Expansion Joint?

A purpose-made device fitted at the beam ends. It lets the deck move with temperature, shrinkage and traffic while the sealing band keeps water away from bearings and piers.

Working principle: The product works through elastic deformation and mechanical interlock to provide reliable sealing or load transfer.

3. Typical Applications

4. Installation and Construction Points

  1. Record the air temperature and preset the opening to the value corresponding to the design reference temperature
  2. Mark and saw-cut the block-out, remove loose concrete and expose a sound base
  3. Straighten the anchor bars and add post-installed rebar where any are missing or misplaced
  4. Set the unit level with the adjacent pavement, deviation not exceeding 3 mm over a 3 m straightedge
  5. Weld the anchors to the specified size while shielding the rubber band from heat
  6. Place C50 steel-fibre concrete, cure for at least 7 days, fit the seals and run a water test before opening to traffic

5. Selection Guide

6. Standards and Quality Control

Bridge Expansion Joint is manufactured and inspected according to applicable national and industry standards. Hengshui Zhanhe Engineering Rubber Co., Ltd. carries out batch inspection before delivery, and inspection certificates together with third-party test reports (where required by the project) can be provided.

Typical standards applied to this product family include Chinese national and transportation industry standards; equivalent international standards can be referenced upon request.

7. FAQ

Q: How does the installation temperature affect the gap?

A: The unit is preset at the design reference temperature. If the air temperature at installation is higher, the girder has already lengthened and the opening is reduced accordingly; if lower, it is increased. Work out the correction with dL = a x L x dT, taking the concrete coefficient as about 1.0e-5/°C, and record the temperature and measured opening.

Q: Why does the anchorage concrete crack so often?

A: It is a stress concentration zone. Typical causes are poor cleaning of the block-out, weak bonding between old and new concrete, and traffic being allowed back before the strength was reached. Use C50 steel-fibre concrete, cure for at least 7 days, and for fast-hardening mixes wait until at least 85% of the design strength.

Q: Can a sealing band be replaced on its own?

A: Yes. On modular joints each band can be pulled out and replaced without breaking out concrete. Bands are wearing parts and generally last 8-12 years, and a single band is normally exchanged within a day. The steel sections and control boxes are left in place if sound.

Q: Does a bump always mean the joint has failed?

A: Not necessarily. Measure the level difference with a 3 m straightedge; anything over 3 mm is clearly felt. Then check the anchor concrete for cracking and the centre beams for looseness. Settlement of the approach embankment produces the same symptom and needs a different repair.

8. Price Factors

The quotation covers the unit itself (steel sections, control boxes, seals), anchors and accessories, transport and lifting, plus installation work such as saw cutting, concreting, curing and traffic management. Each step up in movement range brings a larger section and heavier control box, so unit prices vary widely: single-gap types run to a few hundred yuan per metre, while large-movement modular units reach several thousand. On municipal projects traffic management and night working are a significant share and are best listed separately.

Packing: standard export packing (woven bags, pallets or wooden cases). Delivery terms: EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP as agreed. Payment terms: T/T, L/C or other terms subject to negotiation.
